Wenig/AP/Groll/APThe 23rd district seat drew national attention when Sarah Palin supported Conservative Doug Hoffman (l.), forcing Dede Scozzafava out of the race and leaving Bill Owens (r.) as the winner. Related NewsArticles

From phantom to phenom in NY's 23rdSARANAC LAKE, N.Y. - Conservatives who won a nasty battle to carry the GOP banner in upstate New York lost the war Tuesday night - surrendering a congressional seat held by Republicans for more than a century.

Conservative Party insurgent Doug Hoffman, whose candidacy became a cause for Sarah Palin and Rush Limbaugh, conceded defeat to Democrat Bill Owens. With 88% of precincts counted, Owens led 49% to 45.5%.

"This is only one fight in the battle, people" Hoffman told disappointed supporters. "Let's keep the fight going."

It was a stunning conclusion to a special election to fill a vacant House seat in the far northern reaches of the state that became the unlikely scene of a Republican Party civil war.

Umm....

Reported and talked about ad nauseum today.

Look, Pelosi gets another Democrat in the House. That is what 257 or so. Let's talk about Health Care Reform, she has enough to push anything she wants through the house with or without Owens. His victory doesn't really change the overall landscape. Now, in a years time when all the rest of the 435 seats are up for election, well that might be interesting. But, regardless of what the House is capable of doing, honestly, nothing will go through the Senate as long as the Republicans can pull off a filibuster which as long as Liebermann sticks to his guns, shouldn't be a problem.

Regardless, small fish on this one. The big news was Jersey since that has been a Democratic machine for as long as anyone can remember. Will it change the ultimate vote of next November...I think that depends on how Christie does in his first year.

Owens increases democrat majority in the House.

Yet the Democrats who already had a hefty majority in the House and Senate will CONTINUE to blame Republicans for blocking their bills! #-o [-X  The Democrats are trying to play this up as some kind of victory for them after getting kicked hard by Independent voters in New Jersey and Virgina.

....any port in a storm.......the GOP had major victories in tuesday's election...but some will take a minor victory (with no republican in the race) and trumpet it as the second coming.....even the huffington post...no fan of republicans saw the light.....

"
WASHINGTON — Independents who swept Barack Obama to a historic 2008 victory broke big for Republicans on Tuesday as the GOP wrested political control from Democrats in Virginia and New Jersey, a troubling sign for the president and his party heading into an important midterm election year.

Conservative Republican Bob McDonnell's victory in the Virginia governor's race over Democrat R. Creigh Deeds and moderate Republican Chris Christie's ouster of unpopular New Jersey Gov. Jon Corzine was a double-barreled triumph for a party looking to rebuild after being booted from power in national elections in 2006 and 2008.

....while no idea if your facts are right...you should remember maine does not have primaries so she was picked by a few people in a booth at a pancake house...from her actions she is no republican...they tried the old wolf in sheep's clothing ploy...if she or or democrat had won it would have made little difference....party labels mean squat...votes count....and she and the dem probably would have voted the same.....i love it that a district with 200,000 people is considered a "major" victory....while the loss of two state houses representing over 7 million each is no big deal......what would the dem spin be if the GOP won the maine race race and lost the other two be i wonder..... ....i think i know.

Yep and the "Republican" was a Republican by name only. She is Pro Choice, Backed the Cap & Trade bill as well as the Health care bill. Why do you think she backed the Democrat? If the Conservative candidate had gotten into the race earlier and been a little more charismatic he might have won that seat.

It would have made NO difference in the outcome of votes in the House with the numbers the way they are so it's laughable to hear the Democrats talk about this being a win. Maybe if they were 1 vote short of having enough votes to force through their legislation but they already had more than enough in the House and actually have the numbers in the Senate if not for their own party.

Wrong! Check the history and you'll find the redistricting of this congressional district.

..what we are witnessing here is an old tactic favored by old line chicago politicians.....play down what you don't like (ala nancy peolosi claiming victory) and play up what crumbs you picked up off the floor......
...the baltimore sun...hardly a conservative voice got it pretty well right"=

"WASHINGTON (AP) — Independents who swept Barack Obama to a historic 2008 victory broke big for Republicans on Tuesday as the GOP wrested political control from Democrats in Virginia and New Jersey, a troubling sign for the president and his party heading into an important midterm election year.

Jon Corzine was a double-barreled triumph for a party looking to rebuild after being booted from power in national elections in 2006 and 2008.

Elsewhere on Tuesday, Maine voters rejected a state law that would allow same-sex couples to wed. If supporters had prevailed, it would have marked the first time that the electorate in any state endorsed gay marriage.

And Democrat Bill Owens captured a GOP-held vacant 23rd Congressional District seat in New York in a race that highlighted fissures in the Republican Party and illustrated hurdles the GOP could face in capitalizing on any voter discontent with Obama and Democrats next fall."

...virginia was the top story

... followed closely by new jersey

...followed by maine voters turning down same sex marriage...that is 31st or 32nd state to do so

...and finally buried deep in the story...the democratic victory in upstate new york

but according to some posters...the first three events were no big deal

How about this. I will name a republican fiscal conservative, Ron Paul. Now you give me the name of a democrat that even comes close to his record on spending. Good luck.
